Chicago Bears Defeat Minnesota Vikings in Ugly Primetime Matchup

The Chicago Bears managed to secure a 12-10 victory against the Minnesota Vikings in a game that won't be remembered for its aesthetics.

On Monday night, the Bears faced a blitz-heavy attack from the Vikings, resulting in a less-than-pleasing offensive performance. However, quarterback Justin Fields stepped up when it mattered most, leading the Bears to a game-winning drive in the final minutes.

Fields faced constant pressure throughout the game, with the Vikings blitzing him on 52% of his dropbacks. To counter this, the Bears relied heavily on screen passes and horizontal plays. While this strategy limited Fields’ air yards per attempt and completion, it ultimately paid off on the final drive, where Fields connected with DJ Moore for a crucial 36-yard gain.

The Bears’ passing game struggled for most of the night, but Fields’ game-winning drive boosted their overall grade.

Grade for Passing Offense: C+

The Bears’ rushing offense also had a tough time against the Vikings’ defense. With D’Onta Foreman sidelined due to an ankle injury, rookie Roschon Johnson and Khalil Herbert split carries. Johnson managed 35 yards on 10 carries, while Herbert gained 24 yards on six attempts. Fields was the team’s leading rusher with 59 yards on 12 carries.

Overall, the Bears’ ground attack was lackluster, averaging just 4.2 yards per carry. The offensive line struggled against the Vikings’ front, making it difficult to establish a consistent running game.

Grade for Rushing Offense: C

Defensively, the Bears were dominant. They intercepted Vikings quarterback Dobbs four times and sacked him twice, while also recording nine hurries. The defense came up big in crucial moments, including forcing a quick three-and-out after Fields’ fumble to give the offense another chance to win the game.

The Bears’ defense held Dobbs to 185 passing yards and one touchdown, showcasing their ability to shut down the Vikings’ offense.

Grade for Pass Defense: A

In terms of run defense, the Bears contained the Vikings’ rushing attack. Alexander Mattison gained 52 yards on 10 carries, but the Bears prevented Dobbs from making significant gains on the ground. The interior defensive line and linebackers played a crucial role in stopping the run.

Grade for Run Defense: A

On the coaching front, the Bears’ offensive game plan struggled to find success against the Vikings’ blitz-heavy approach. The overreliance on screen passes hindered the offense’s creativity and limited their effectiveness. However, the defensive game plan devised by head coach Matt Eberflus was successful, with well-executed simulated pressures and effective play-calling.

Grade for Matt Eberflus: A-

Grade for Luke Getsy: D
