The biggest game in football is upon us. On Sunday, February 11, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada will host Super Bowl LVIII.
This year’s Super Bowl sees the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. Brock Purdy and the Niners look to play spoiler and keep Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs from winning their second straight Super Bowl ring.
How They Got Here
The 49ers didn’t make it easy for themselves in the NFC Championship against the Detroit Lions. The game started as bad as it could for the Niners with them going into half trailing 24-7 they needed a big comeback. They turned things around in the second half defensively and offensively. The defense held the Lions to just seven points in the second half which allowed the offense to climb out of the hole.
Purdy put the team on his back and had a few big scrambles that were the difference for the team, rushing for 48 yards on five attempts, he also threw for 267 yards and a touchdown. Christian McCaffrey was impressive as well with 132 total yards and two touchdowns. In the receiving game, Deebo Samuel led the way with 89 yards.
For the first time in Patrick Mahomes’ career, he had to go on the road in the AFC Championship game. It was an easy matchup with Kansas City having to travel to Maryland to take on the Baltimore Ravens. The Chiefs were able to walk away with a 17-10 win but the Chiefs looked fairly dominant at times. Kansas City’s offense got off to a fast start scoring 17 points in the first half but they were unable to get anything going in the second half.
Travis Kelce has come up big for the Chiefs in the playoffs so far. Through three games he’s got 23 receptions for 262 yards, and three touchdowns.
The defense for Kansas City has really been their highlight of the season. We’re used to Mahomes and the offense putting up big numbers and they’ve struggled this season but the defense is why this Chiefs team is in the Super Bowl. They’ll have a tough task against this strong Niners offense.
On the season the Chiefs defense ranks second in the league in average yards allowed per game. The most points that the defense has allowed all season has been 27. They’ll be going against a San Francisco team that has only been held under 20 points four times.
FanDuel has the spread currently at 2.5. DraftKings does have the moneyline slightly closer with San Francisco at -122 and Kansas City at +102.
In terms of touchdown scorers, McCaffrey seems to be the sportsbook favorite to score with Bet365 having his anytime touchdown scorer odds at -225. Behind him, they have Kelce (-125), Isaiah Pacheco (-120), Samuel (+137), Rashee Rice (+140), and Brandon Aiyuk (+175).
- Christian McCaffrey anytime touchdown scorer
- McCaffrey 100+ total yards
McCaffrey has scored 25 touchdowns this season and he’s only not scored in three games this season. The Niners will want to give McCaffrey the ball often and I think it’ll be difficult for the Chiefs to keep him out of the endzone. McCaffrey has gone over 100 yards in 11 games this season
- Travis Kelce anytime touchdown scorer
Kelce has had what could be considered a down year but he’s really shown up for the Chiefs in the playoffs. With three touchdowns in three games, I would expect Kelce to at least get looks in the red zone. He’s Mahomes’ favorite target and if the Chiefs are able to win this game Kelce will play a big part.
- Patrick Mahomes 250+ passing yards
Mahomes has only not gone over 200 yards twice this season and he’s had more than 250 yards in nine games this season.
