What Does It Mean To “Bet Like a Lady ™”?

Most people may think that sports betting is a thing for men, but I beg to differ. Women bet on sports too, and the goal of BettingLadies.com is to create a space for us to connect. We know you're out there, but we are mostly ignored. So let's change that.

Some quick stats for you. Three years ago, 888 Holdings did a study where they found that not only do women bet on sports, they do it better than men. Go figure. The study, conducted in New Jersey in 2020, found that women bettors got a 20% return on their bets, while men lost 5%.

Since Betting Ladies launched, the response has been immense. So many women have reached out saying that what we do is important and that they "can't believe no one has done this before". One of the questions we got this week was about our slogan: Bet Like A Lady™. It's a phrase that came naturally to me and I hadn't thought about what it might mean for others. Until now.

Bet Like A Lady™ is the slogan of all things Betting Ladies. We use it both metaphorically and literally, but the phrase itself does not imply that there is a specific way women should bet. As a women that bets, what does Bet Like A Lady ™ mean to you?

For me, it's a playful and light-hearted way of saying, "I bet on sports, and I do it my way". I like champagne, I like the fine things in life, and I like betting. When I bet, I bet like a lady.

Women are probably going to bet differently than men. How else could we win so much more, right :-)? Our catchphrase suggests certain underlining qualities that are associated with women, something that underpins our M.O., so to speak.

Here are a few points that resonate with me when I think about how we women bet.

1. Strategic thinking: Women are often perceived as being more thoughtful and calculated in our decision-making. Betting like a lady, then, may involve conducting thorough research, analyzing odds, and making informed choices rather than relying on impulse or gut feelings.
2. Better risk management: Women tend to take fewer risks compared to men. We are cautious and maybe we choose lower-risk bets, focusing on more certain outcomes rather than high-risk, high-reward opportunities.
3. Discipline and bankroll management: We are often associated with higher self-control and money management skills. Betting like a lady means practicing responsible gambling, and effectively managing our bankroll to be able to bet for longer and in a sustainable way.
4. Selective betting: Rather than spreading bets across multiple games, women may be more inclined to focus on specific high-profile games that we have a deeper understanding of. Betting like a lady involves strategic selectivity, concentrating on areas where we have some expertise so that we can maximize our chances of hitting those bets.

What makes women better at sports betting?

One possible explanation for why we are better bettors, is our inclination toward strategic thinking and aversion to risk, like I mentioned. Women often approach gambling with a more calculated mindset, carefully analyzing odds and making informed decisions where possible. 

Unlike men, who may be more susceptible to impulsive wagers, women are more likely to adopt a rational approach, minimizing our exposure to unnecessary risks.

Women's preference for placing bets on lower-odds events might be a factor here too. Going for safer bets rather than long shots, women tend to take the "sure thing" approach, which also increases our chances of winning.

The study by 888 Holdings found that female bettors were 74% less likely to engage in high-risk parlay bets. So, we stay away from the high-risk, high-reward bets and make smarter bets, simply put. And the returns are more consistent.

Women are smart with money

Another important finding of the study was that women are less likely to extend winning streaks, preferring to pocket their winnings rather than reinvest them. So, we win some cash and then look at the extra money as a bonus to be cherished (not spent).

This approach hints at a level of financial discipline that may contribute to our overall success in sports betting. By withdrawing our winnings and managing our bankrolls a little better, we women can safeguard our winnings and reduce the likelihood of incurring any significant losses. Makes sense, right?

Women focus on important stuff

When women bet, we bet on single bets on known events such as the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Match Madness, and so on. This targeted approach may help us as these events often attract a higher level of media coverage, making it easier to access a plethora of details, and relevant information that helps make informed decisions. By concentrating our bets on high-profile games and matches, we can leverage our learnings and, subsequently, increase our chances of hitting our bets.

Women are better bettors in general

The study by 888 Holdings also looked at casino results and revealed that women outperformed men there as well. In the age group of 25-34, women lost 12% in online casino games, while men suffered losses of 24%. Those are pretty impressive numbers. Among younger gamblers aged 18-24, women achieved an impressive 30% return on their bets, while men experienced a significant loss of -67.3%.
