How betting started in Maryland
Maryland’s journey to legal sports betting wasn’t quick, exactly. Efforts began as early as 2017, but federal laws at the time kept the industry in limbo. After PASPA was overturned in 2018, everyone thought Maryland would be an early adopter, but the state Senate delayed progress for years.
It wasn’t until Maryland voters approved sports betting in a 2020 referendum that things really took off. Lawmakers followed through in 2021, legalizing both retail and online sports betting. Retail sportsbooks launched later that same year, and after some delays, online betting went live in November 2022.
