In Washington you can bet but only in land-based casinos. With over 30 states allowing some form of legal sports betting, Washington remains one of the smallest markets, likely due to the lack of online gambling options.

If you're a sports bettor and you live in Washington, your betting options are rather limited, unfortunately. While both online and retail sports betting is technically allowed, there is only one mobile app available through the Snoqualmie Tribe, which requires bets to be placed on tribal property.

In-person betting can be done at various other tribal casinos throughout the state, but commercial casinos are not allowed.

The Washington State Gambling Commission regulates sports betting in the state. Note that age requirements vary among tribal casinos, with some allowing bets at 18 years old and others requiring players to be at least 21.

While Native American tribes offer betting on a pretty wide range of sporting events and games, betting on in-state college teams is NOT allowed. This is a common restriction across the U.S., with each state having different laws for college sports betting. With 29 federally recognized tribes in the state, each one has the opportunity to apply for a license and offer sports betting, and rules, naturally, will vary.

There are three major sports teams in Washington. The Seattle Seahawks are arguably the most popular team and, just as in many other states,  football remains the top sport for betting.

Seattle also has popular baseball and hockey teams, such as the Mariners and the newly added Seattle Kraken who have started to gain a strong following in the NHL. While there is no NBA team, there is potential for an expansion team in the future.

What's more, both the University of Washington and Washington State University also have strong followings, but betting on in-state college teams is not permitted according to state laws.

The future of sports betting in Washington

As it stands, the current rules and laws regarding sports betting in Washington are not likely to change any time soon. Tribal casinos remain the only legal option for betting, with no plans for expansion at this time.

However, there is potential for big-name operators to enter the market and provide mobile app options in the future. While the state may not see direct tax revenue from sports betting, the industry has provided funding for Native American tribes.

Despite limited options in the state, responsible gambling practices should always be practiced. It's important to keep in mind that while tribal casinos currently dominate the market, there is potential for other operators to enter as well.

As with any form of gambling, it's crucial to prioritize enjoyment and responsible behavior. If sports betting in Washington becomes anything beyond that, seeking help is always a wise decision. As the industry continues to evolve in this unique state, staying informed and practicing responsible gambling will be key for a safe and enjoyable experience.
